India could experience a shortage of air conditioners and refrigerators in the summer of 2025 due to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) refusing to recertify more than 50 component suppliers from China and Vietnam.
The air conditioner market in India is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.54 percent from 2024 to 2029. As global warming and the ongoing heatwave continue to drive up demand, the sales of air conditioners are expected to reach around 14 million units by the end of 2024.
However, the decision to not certify component suppliers for the AC market is aimed at growing local manufacturing, which could impact the supply of essential components like compressors and advanced electronics. This has raised concerns among manufacturers about potential import substitutions and capacity limitations.
Imports of essential components such as copper tubes, metal sheets, compressors, advanced electronics, and motors could be disrupted, affecting companies like Sanyo Refrigeration Equipment, Avic Electromechanical (Shenyang), and Highly Group, according to http://tradebrains.in/ source. Additionally, some executives from major electronics firms have indicated that the government has signaled it will approve fewer Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifications for imports.
