The Refrigeration Colloquium 2025, (held during May in Munich) concluded, establishing a new benchmark for technical depth, innovation, and collaborative exchange in the cold chain sector. Organized under the theme “Sustainable Cooling Systems for Food,” the two-day academic gathering brought together 87 refrigeration technology experts and industry stakeholders at three unique venues: the Science Congress Center Munich, the ESO Supernova Planetarium and Visitor Centre, and the TÜV SÜD laboratory in Olching.
Day 1: Knowledge Exchange and Industry Outlooks
The opening day at the Science Congress Center Munich began with networking and refreshments, followed by a welcome address from Sylvain Courtey, President of Eurovent Certification. He paid tribute to the late Tim Kroeger, setting a thoughtful tone for the day. Moderator Gerhard Frei (COOLPLAN) introduced the agenda and provided an overview of the technical presentations.
Concluding the technical session, Peter Schnepf of TÜV SÜD previewed the next day’s laboratory visit. Gerhard set the stage for an evening under the starry sky with his words.
Stars, Simulation, and Social Exchange
Attendees walked to the ESO Supernova Planetarium, where Julian Janßen (Jinjan – Clima Consulting) presented simulation-based planning strategies and explained the HVAC design of the planetarium. This was followed by a captivating planetarium show and access to the exhibition. The evening ended on a high note with rooftop cocktails, dinner, and casual networking under the stars.
Day 2: Behind the Scenes at TÜV SÜD

The second day featured hands-on insights into advanced HVACR testing and certification at the TÜV SÜD laboratory in Olching. Participants were divided into groups for guided tours of
- The refrigeration plant rooms, in which temperatures of up to -50 °C can be generated.
- The transport refrigeration test chambers – including a short visit to a -8°C chamber.
- The acoustic chamber – specializing in detailed noise measurements, frequency analyses and vibration assessments to ensure compliance with acoustic standards.
- HVAC test chambers – where heat pumps, air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units, and other HVAC components can be evaluated.
- The CO2 test bench and the natural refrigerant test chambers – for testing cooling systems that use natural refrigerants.
The tour gave attendees a comprehensive view of TÜV SÜD’s product testing capabilities, particularly for sustainable HVAC systems.
Final Reflections and Networking
The event culminated in a relaxed three-course dinner at the Hotel Restaurant Groß near Bergkirchen. In a pleasant atmosphere, participants had one last opportunity to network and reflect on two inspiring days filled with knowledge and networking.
Organized by Eurovent Certification and the Eurovent Association in collaboration with Gerhard Frei (COOLPLAN), the Refrigeration Colloquium 2025 was also supported by Roland Handschuh and media partners cci Dialog GmbH, KKA, and Klima Journal.
