India’s HVAC energy consumption to triple by 2038: emphasis on sustainability and green tech


India’s HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and Refrigeration sector is experiencing remarkable growth, fuelled by several factors such as rapid urbanisation, increased construction activities, and changing consumer preferences.

According to the ‘India Cooling Action Plan’ released by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, the energy consumption of air conditioners in India is expected to surge from around 190 TWH (Terawatt-hours) in 2023 to an estimated 600 TWH by 2038. This exponential rise underscores the significant expansion of the industry.

One of the primary drivers of this growth is the proliferation of residential buildings and commercial establishments across India’s tier 1, 2, and 3 cities, accommodating diverse populations ranging from 100,000 to 20 million individuals. As urban areas are expanding and living standards are improving, there is a corresponding surge in the demand for HVAC systems, particularly air conditioning, to provide comfort and convenience to residents and other commercial buildings.

This growth trend aligns with India’s broader Green Movement, which promotes sustainability and eco-friendly practices across various industries, including construction and HVAC. Over the past 23 years, organisations such as the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), TERI, and ASSOCHAM have played pivotal roles in advocating for green technologies and raising stakeholder awareness.
