Mitsubishi MECH-iF chillers redefine cooling standards

The MS Compressor is designed with Symmetrical Compression Load to minimize and balance loads, resulting in a bearing lifespan of over 150,000 hours (17.5 years). Along with the extremely efficient MS Compressor, each MECH-iF has an in-house developed R.E.D.

Mitsubishi Electric introduced an air-cooled chiller with a unique single-screw compressor that provides improved energy efficiency and reliability for a longer operational life. The MECH-iF line has capacities ranging from 345kW to 921kW, and it is available with either R1234ze (G04) or R513A (G05) refrigerant and brand-new proprietary screw variable speed compressors.

MECH-iF represents a significant milestone in the company’s air-cooled screw chiller line, paving the path for the development and integration of patented core technologies. This high-efficiency air-cooled chiller is the first to employ Mitsubishi Electric’s innovative MS variable-speed screw compressor and external inverter.

The MS Compressor is built with Symmetrical Compression Load for reduced and balanced loads, ensuring a bearing lifespan of over 150,000 hours (17.5 years). All bearings are in low-pressure locations, which allows them to be lubricated without the use of an oil pump, ensuring the compressor’s operation lasts longer.

Alongside the highly efficient MS Compressor, each MECH-iF comes with the in-house developed R.E.D. Cooler, a patented technological solution that further improves the efficiency of the unit and reduces the exergy loss of the expansion phase. EC fans with high efficiency housing are provided per standard, to perfectly achieve varying air flow requirements and reduce the energy consumption, improving the efficiency of the unit.

Variable Vi technology enables automated internal volume ratio adaptation via the integrated slide valve, providing maximum efficiency in all operating conditions and making the MS single screw compressor the right option for any application. Furthermore, a novel oil return circuit guarantees that the bearings are fully lubricated, that the casing and screw are perfectly coupled, and that all moving and static parts are completely sealed.

With the combination of these efficient variable technologies, the G04 and G05 ranges have achieved exceptional seasonal efficiency, with SEER values of up to 5.9 and SEPR HT of up to 6.8. MECH-iF’s performance values make it a flagship product that is very competitive in the top-performing air source chiller market.

“Mitsubishi Electric has over 35 years’ experience in developing single screw compressors,” said Matthew Philo, UK Product Manager for MECH-iF. “We’ve used that knowledge to create a single screw design that can be at the heart of the MECH-iF to deliver best-in-class efficiencies, ideal for the comfort and process markets.”

MECH-iF models include a compressor enclosure as standard, as noise emissions are an important consideration when using air-cooled chillers. In addition, they are available in three sound configurations: standard, with noise reducer kit, or as low noise variants, depending on installation needs.

“The MECH-iF range can operate across a wide range of conditions: with ambient temperatures as low as to -20°C and up to 50°C, whilst evaporator leaving water temperatures can span from 20°C for IT Cooling, down to -10°C for process applications,” adds Philo. “The chillers are designed with easy installation in mind; we can offer the MECH-iF with key options such as integrated hydronic pumps, heat exchanger treatments or electrical and thermal meters fitted at the factory.”

MECH-iF-G04’s operating envelope makes it appropriate for all applications (comfort, process, and IT cooling), but MECH-iF-G05 is most suited for comfort and process applications. An comprehensive array of accessories can also be given for a custom setup, making the range appropriate for mission critical and harsh environment applications.
